The Missing Boys – Projections in Italian Cinemas 2025

After being selected and receiving widespread acclaim at numerous international festivals (including the New York Independent Cinema Awards, where the film won Best Documentary feature), the warm reception in Bologna at Visioni Italiane, and the premieres in Rome, Cagliari, and Sassari, Davide Catinari’s film The Missing Boys begins its journey of projections in Italian theaters.

The first stop will be Milan, with the screening on Wednesday, February 19, at the Cinema Anteo, in the presence of Mauro “Joe” Giovanardi from La Crus. Following that, screenings will take place in Turin, Padua, Bassano del Grappa, Pisa, and Fiesole, with a rich and constantly updated schedule of events. During the screenings, several figures from the Italian music scene will be present, such as Madaski, Davide Toffolo (Tre allegri ragazzi morti), Carlo Casale (Frigidaire Tango), and Dome La Muerte and Bruno Casini (Not Moving).

Davide Catinari is the founder of the project Dorian Gray, a band with which he recorded seven albums and performed hundreds of concerts both in Italy and abroad. He is also the creator of the “Sound and Vision” project, a performative format combining music and images related to the world of comics (he has also collaborated with the magazine Linus in the past). Catinari’s work is a visual story about the origins of an independent music scene, conceived as a circular journey balancing two timelines: the narrative of the past and the memory of an augmented present, that of the “missing boy” trapped in an eternal youth. The film focuses on the period between 1979 and 1989, a seminal decade linked to an indelible generational shift, like an imaginary journey “from ants to clouds,” an invisible thread suspended between those boys and their great dream.

The Missing Boys is a film by Davide Catinari.
A visual story about the origins of an independent music scene, conceived as a circular journey balancing two timelines: the narrative of the past and the memory of an augmented present, that of the “missing boy” trapped in eternal youth. The film unfolds through a circuit of memories, weaving between the revolution sparked by punk and the end of the 1980s, tracing the journey of a young person in search of the roots of their present, an invisible path between music, places, emotions, and dreams.
The resulting generational diary is a living and real testimony to the vitality of the Italian province, between affinities and divergences generated by a widespread desire for change, a “common feeling” that transcends the places of origin. It is a portrait of an era destined to last as long as its myth, the “new golden dream” suspended in the shadow.
The film, made with the collaboration of Mario Marino (editing, photography), is produced by Vox Day Società Cooperativa with the financial support of the Fondazione di Sardegna and the backing of the Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission (hospitality fund and location scouting).
The vinyl record titled The Missing Boys, containing the film’s soundtrack, was released in preview in March 2024. It was produced by Goodfellas in collaboration with Spittle Records, under the direction of Oderso Rubini.
