Motorpsycho

Rightfully considered an absolute authority in Northern European louder psych-rock as well as masters of musical cut-up, Motorpsycho—the headliners of the September 7th evening—have inspired an entire generation of bands with their powerful and swirling sound, where genres like stoner, heavy rock, psychedelia, prog, and folk magically intertwine. Formed in 1989 in Trondheim, Norway, the band’s core lineup today consists of Bent Sæther (vocals, bass, guitar, drums, and primary songwriter) and Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan (guitar and vocals), while the original formation also included Kjell Runar Jenssen, later replaced by Håkon Gebhardt. Their debut album, Lobotomizer, was released in 1991, but their breakthrough came in 1993 with Demon Box, which gained significant acclaim in Norway. This was followed in 1994 by Timothy’s Monster, the album that cemented Motorpsycho’s place on the European rock scene. Subsequent releases, such as Blissard (1996), Angels And Daemons At Play (1997), and Trust Us (1998), confirmed the band as one of Europe’s most intriguing acts, paving the way for a prolific career: to date, they have released twenty-nine studio albums, along with numerous live records, singles, and EPs. Among these, Child of the Future (2009)—released exclusively on vinyl to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary—was recorded with Steve Albini, the legendary producer who recently passed away. Over the last decade, Motorpsycho’s output has ventured into progressive rock territories, with albums such as Here Be Monsters (2015), The Tower (2017), and the monumental The Crucible (2019). Their most recent work, Yay!, released in June 2023, marks a return to more relaxed sonic landscapes, drawing inspiration from 1960s English folk, leaving behind the massive, Scandinavian-style riffs that have long defined their sound.
